Iron Man Concept Text Effect in Photoshop

A photoshop tutorial on how to create an Iron Man concept text effect.

Step one:

Start by creating a new document in Photoshop. Leave all the default settings except for the canvas dimensions, use 700×400 pixels with a black background. Now make a new layer set and name it ‘Text Design’.

Select your Horizontal Type Tool, above your screen under the options palette set the font family to Te Cen MT, regular, 100 pt, strong and #D4B35D color shade. In a new text layer type your text.

Step two:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add an Inner Shadow, Satin, Pattern Overlay and Stroke blending options to your text layer.

Step three:

In a new text layer type out your name in white color shade.




Step four:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add a Satin, Gradient Overlay and Pattern Overlay blending options to your white text layer. Then set the layer’s blending mode to Darken.

Step five:

Highlight the ‘Text Design’ layer set on the layers palette then go to Layer > Merge Layer Set, the layer set should turn into a regular layer. Now go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Step six:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add an Inner Glow and Color Overlay blending options to your text design layer.

Step seven:

Duplicate the text design layer from the last step then make a new layer and merge it with the duplicate text design layer. Now apply a motion blur through Filter > Blur > Motion Blur, apply the settings below.

Step eight:

Select the Eraser tool with a large soft brush then erase the bottom half of the motion blur layer.

Step nine:

Go to Filter > Distort > Ripple and apply the settings below.

Step ten:

Duplicate the motioned design with ripple effect layer.

    I get all the way to the end and find my self with the color overlay as a solid color AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! I am tryng to check my steps but cannot seem to find a mistake. Can anyone help?

    C Pate, you need to set the ‘blending mode’ to Color so it’s not a solid color and shows as a color overlay. Check the layer styles images.
